Your comfort zone is where you feel most at ease, where you don’t have to feel anxious in any way, but also where you don’t grow at all. Remember doing a presentation in school and being terrified, but then growing 10cm (figuratively speaking) once it was done? Or having a crush and finally ask them out and realizing it wasn’t that bad? Or daring to take on that one project you weren’t actually qualified for but from which you learned A LOT? That was your comfort zone breaking.
Once you have a comfortable life it’s easy to just let it flow by itself; living in an apartment (maybe with a partner, dog, cat, or even baby), working nine to five, going for that “one” glass of wine on Friday evening and yoga/brunch on Sunday and then starting it all over again.
You pretty much just summed up my life, how do I break my comfort zone?
No worries, everyone has a comfort zone and you just have to think of things that would break it. It doesn’t even have to be anything big, take one step at a time. To find out where your comfort zone ends, think about things that other people do that you find extremely brave. If it scares you just enough you know you have to try it!
Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Try finding a new friend online or through a meetup.
- Find a weekend course in surfing or yoga near you.
- Go on a spontaneous weekend trip to a nearby city.
- Make yourself talk to one stranger during the day.
- Ask your boss if there are any projects coming up you could handle.
- Go out eating at a restaurant with nothing but your own thoughts.
- Do volunteer work.
- If you wear make up every day, go without.
- Train in a park.
- Take a selfie and post it on social media.
If you really are in a rut; take a whole week and plan out something for every day that makes you a bit nervous, and by the end of the week evaluate how well you did. As I said before, it doesn’t have to be big things. Making small efforts regularly can be a great way to get more confidence. Imagine talking to someone new every day, after a while it won’t feel special at all and you can find something new to overcome!
Have you broken your comfort zone in the last week? What did you do?
